Suppression of SBS-Induced RF Phase Noise in an RF-Photonic Link

چکیده
In this paper, we examine and suppress the effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering on the phase noise of a 10 GHz signal transmitted over an RF-photonic link. We demonstrate the appearance of interference peaks in the RF phase noise of a microwave signal transmitted through a 10 km optical fiber link. We attribute these peaks to double Brillouin scattering using a reduced model. We determine that there are at least three optical noise sources at optical powers relevant to RF transmission: shot noise, Rayleigh scattering, and stimulated Brillouin scattering. Furthermore, we demonstrate the suppression of noise from both Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering using frequency modulation. We demonstrate further suppression of phase noise from Brillouin scattering using a concatenation of fibers with different Brillouin frequency shifts.

Experimental Study of Sbs Suppression via White Noise Phase Modulation (postprint)
Power scaling of single-frequency high power optical fiber lasers is limited due to the stimulated-Brillouin scattering (SBS). Towards that end, line broadening through white noise phase modulation can be used to suppress SBS. Theoretical models predict the SBS threshold enhancement factor as a function of linewidth and fiber length, but have yet to be experimentally verified. A radio frequency...
متن کاملSuppression of Rayleigh-scattering-induced noise in OEOs.
Optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs) are hybrid RF-photonic devices that promise to be environmentally robust high-frequency RF sources with very low phase noise. Previously, we showed that Rayleigh-scattering-induced noise in optical fibers coupled with amplitude-to-phase noise conversion in photodetectors and amplifiers leads to fiber-length-dependent noise in OEOs. In this work, we report on tw...
متن کاملThe effect of superposition of 900 MHz and incoherent noise electromagnetic fields on the induction of reactive oxygen species in SP2/0 cell line
Background: Induction of cellular response after exposure to electromagnetic fields is limited to coherent fields. An incoherent noise field is supposed to suppress the bioeffects of regular RF electromagnetic fields. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of GSM mobile phone-induced radiofrequency (RF) on the induction of oxidative stress in SP2/0 cell line. Materials and Meth...
متن کاملDistributed balanced photodetectors for high-performance RF photonic systems
A novel velocity-matched distributed balanced photodetector operating at 1.3 and l.55p.tm wavelengths has been experimentally demonstrated. Distributed absorption and velocity matching ofthe optical and microwave signals are employed to achieve high saturation photocurrent. A common mode rejection ratio greater than 27 dB has been achieved over a wide range of photocurrents. More than 24dB supp...
متن کاملBalanced Electroabsorption Modulator for High-Linearity, Low-Noise Microwave Analog Optical Link
The paper presents a new device for analog optical links, the balanced electroabsorption modulator, to allow the simultaneous cancellation of laser relative intensity noise, all even-order distortions, and third order intermodulation. The RF photonic link employing the new balanced modulator shows great improvement in the overall link performance with respect to conventional links using a singl...
